Planning for Vaughan's Future Hospital
< Back to News

Vaughan’s future hospital is beginning to take shape. The site has been purchased and the next planning phase is underway. Improving health care services for our residents is a high priority for Council and everyone is anxious to see shovels in the ground.

A major boost in that direction came from the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care’s $7 million grant for master planning, announced by the Vaughan Health Campus of Care (VHCC) and York Central Hospital, which will be joining forces to improve hospital services in our rapidly growing communities.

The collaboration between the two will include a restructuring of the York Central Hospital Board of Trustees, to include members from the VHCC and the Vaughan community. This new board will guide the development of new health services, including a hospital in Vaughan and the further revitalization of the York Central Hospital location in Richmond Hill.

The location of Vaughan’s future hospital has now been finalized: on the north side of Major Mackenzie Drive between Highway 400 and Jane Street, a convenient and accessible location from all directions.

A different kind of health care is now being offered in Vaughan through the Vaughan Community Health Centre (VCHC), which opened in February of this year and continues to register new clients every day. Of the 22 community health centres that have opened in Ontario, VCHC is the fastest growing.

This shows the need for health care resources to match population growth. As Vaughan continues to grow and the local economy expands, the lack of accessible local health services will present more challenges.

To better meet those challenges, the VCHC has studied the many neighbourhoods in Vaughan and designed programs to meet the specific needs of those people who may have difficulty accessing a full range of primary healthcare services.

This reflects the VCHC model which views a person’s health needs in both a family and community context. In addition to providing primary healthcare, the VCHC will develop and provide a variety of health promotion and illness prevention services which focus on raising awareness and addressing the broader social determinants of health. These include everything from education and literacy to poverty, employment, gender and culture.
