The
Toronto-York Spadina
Subway Extension Project (TYSSE) will provide a critical extension for
the existing Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway system across the
municipal boundary between the City of Toronto and The Regional
Municipality of York (York Region). Facts about the TYSSE: Length of Subway Extension: 8.6 km • 6.2 km from Downsview Station to Steeles West station (in Toronto) • 2.4 km from Steeles West Station to Vaughan Corporate Centre Station (in York Region) This will be the first TTC rapid transit line to cross the City of Toronto boundary. Description of the route map: The Toronto - York Spadina Subway Extension is a 8.6km extension from Downsview Station north west through York University within the City of Toronto and north to the Vaughan Corporate Centre in the The Regional Municipality of York. There are six stations sites currently planned: Sheppard Avenue West, on Parc Downsview Park Lands: Finch West station at the corner of Keele Street and Finch Avenue; York University station near the common of York University; Steeles West station at Northwest Gate and Steeles Avenue, east of Jane; Highway 407 station adjacent to Higway 407 and west of Jane Street; and Vaughan Corporate Centre near Highway 7, west of Jane Street. Planned Service Levels: • Trains every 4 minutes Six stations will be built along the extension: (station names are subject to change) 1. Sheppard West - on Parc Downsview Park lands, adjacent to the Barrie GO Transit Line 2. Finch West - at the corner of Keele Street and Finch Avenue 3. York University - near the common of York University 4. Steeles West - at North West Gate and Steeles Avenue, east of Jane Street 5. Highway 407 - adjacent to Highway 407 and Jane Street 6. Vaughan Corporate Centre - near Highway 7 west of Jane Street Commuter Parking: To encourage commuters to use the subway system, 2,900 new parking spaces will be built at three stations along the extension. They include: 1. Finch West Station - 400 spaces 2. Steeles West Station - 1,900 spaces 3. Highway 407 Station - 600 spaces Open for Service: Subway service is expected to begin in 2015. Environmental Assessments: • Provincial environmental assessment approved for Downsview to Steeles West portion in March 2007 • Provincial environmental assessment approved for Steeles West to Vaughan Corporate Centre portion in April 2007 • Federal Environmental Assessment approved for entire project in March 2008 Estimated Project Cost: The estimated cost of this project is $2.6 billion. Project Funding: The Toronto - York Spadina Subway Extension project is jointly funded by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario, the City of Toronto and The Regional Municipality of York. • The Government of Canada has committed $697 million, of which $75 million has already been provided. • The Province of Ontario has provided $870 million, which has been deposited into the Move Ontario Trust. • The City of Toronto and The Regional Municipality of York have committed to fund one-third of total project costs. Toronto will contribute $526 million and York Region will contribute $352 million. |
